Hello blog!!! Back at it again with another banger blog where i review a couple videos. Enjoy!

1. Dare to Thrill Film Opening Daniel Garzon

I believe although the clip does not need to discuss the whole plot of the movie, the clip could have elaborated on the plot a bit more in our opinion. However, giving little context does make the reaction of opening the trunk more significant or unexpected which adds value. The group executed the shots, angles, and lighting of the car extremely well using elements such as lowkey lighting which helped portray the idea that the friends were having fun driving around the city. The choice of music also fit well and supported the energetic and lively environment they were trying to portray. Focusing on the technical elements to a greater extent compared to dialogue is an idea we can extract to use for our clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=nYpjHCwRO6Q

2. Always Watching Film Opening

The menacing music used in the background adds to the rising tension throughout the back-and-forth scene of the therapy session and Kane stalking his best friend. The close up shot of Kane with his eyes twitching perfectly demonstrates his crazy and manic obsession with his best friend and his life. The back-and-forth dialogue between Kane and his therapist along with his tone shows how obsessive he is over his best friend as well. Making sure our group plays into our character’s roles effectively will be crucial to our film opening. Cutting between the scenes of Kane kidnapping his best friend and Kane talking about the motivation to do so to his therapist further supports his deranged personality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-yrsmQS7bo&feature=youtu.be

3. The Blue Boar

The scene starts with a close up on the girl walking with her mother, focusing on her face expression showing she is exhausted and annoyed, they are outside in a woods like setting which they made clear, with a close up shot of their feet walking, the mother is telling her about the garden and potatoes  they have and how she hasn't been taking care of it, like if the daughter is her worker starting to punish her and raise her voice, the daughter gets angry and wants to run away, hesitating she starts to Panick and runs into the woods, with a tracking shot we see her run she than proceeds to climb up a tree and sing. We can tell they are trying to imitate a later time by their outfits and shoes, doing a pretty good job with the music highlighting how she feels free, they could have done better with the acting or giving more context. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvMH-1XdR9c

4. White coat

This scene starts with a close shots of the chemicals pourings, dim lighting, and fog, so we know it's going to be a dark genre, going into many transitions of a man tied to chair we can tell that he has been drugged and kidnapped,  we than see a scientist mixing liquids and what looks like blood almost as if he's trying to come up with some scary experiments. The scientist keeps mixing his chemicals, they then show the man that was tied up is free walking around the room looking at the liquids and mixtures created. The music really sets the tone for this clip along with the effects of the fog and the man that was tied sweating, they did a really good job with including all the technical elements and executing a nice film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=dvAsmo32uo0

5. Stalker

This clips open with a girl waking up from her bed like any other day and starts getting ready. There is then non diegetic mysterious music playing in the background. The girl turns around as if there was something she heard or felt. There is a close up of her face as she turned around, she was scared to look. It then goes to a straight cut of her in school looking for a pen where she then finds a note. As she opened the note and read it there was a scary, mysterious sound in the background (non-diegetic) he started running, it fades out to her running out of the school, and another fade of her getting in her car and struggling to get the car started. There is then a mid-shot of her sitting in her car panicking. It then ends where she looks out the window and screams. All of this conveys mysteriousness and suspension for the audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxIZJKdc-Sw&feature=youtu.be

6. Nostalgia

The short film does a good job of using calming and sad piano music to create a nostalgic feeling. Starting with the sky is a nice way to set a peaceful mood. The pan movement across the painting is a good idea because it lets the audience take in all the details and feel the meaning behind it. Showing the grandmother outside adds a personal and calm touch, and the pictures of what she finds comforting make the story feel more relatable and emotional. However, the frequent switching between these scenes might feel a bit jumpy if it isn’t done smoothly. From this, I’ve learned that in my own film opening, I’d focus on keeping the mood steady and making the transitions flow better. Adding warm colors could also help tie everything together and make the scenes feel more connected. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p8azlLRHyqaShaOJC6SBJwzGx7s9Cjpk/view

7. Rise

This clip opens with a person coming out of his car and getting some soccer supplies out of his trunk. It then cuts to him getting ready on the field. From there it straight cuts to him playing with the soccer ball on the field and we hear a sound motif of the music he’s listening to. A straight cut then shows another guy getting out of the car and going to watch the other person outside of the gate. Towards the end of the video when the sun seems to be going down, we then see an insert of the main soccer guy changing his outfit on the field and getting ready to leave. As he walks out of the soccer park, he runs into the other guy leaning on the main character’s car. Then, a close up of each character shows an eyeline match of each person looking at each other. Key features of this film like the closeups of the characters and items emphasize the actions that each person does. The low angle shot at the beginning of the film taken from the trunk of a car was something I greatly appreciated and added a creative touch to the piece. It also revealed the actions that the main character was going to partake in. The mid shot of a mysterious character walking towards the soccer field also greatly frames his importance. The over the shoulder shots of each character making eye contact also helps emphasize their confrontation. The stark contrast of the music playing while the main character plays on the field with the silence of the mysterious character highlights that the main character does not notice the other person. The best part about this film was probably the way it was able to emphasize the main character playing soccer and seeing him be “in the zone.” The sound motif and insert shots really helped to add more detail and emphasized his actions. I definitely want to include relevant sound motifs in my film to help develop an atmosphere as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9AKdUT8nyg&feature=youtu.be

8. Dear Lover

This film opens with clips of the wilderness. Some are close ups of a pond, others are establishing shots. A sound motif of a piano plays in the background. Then it straight cuts to a high angle shot of what seems to be the main character sitting on the ground. A fade in black transition then shows the title of the film and then it fades out. As it fades out, a voiceover of the character starts as we see her crying on the ground outside. As she cries, we see insert shots of her throwing things and a high angle shot of her. Following this, there is an interview of her in a bedroom talking. As she talks we see over the shoulder shots of her by the pond. When she speaks about her girlfriend, there are cutaway shots that reveal who the girlfriend is and what she looks like. These shots have a white hue, indicating her feelings toward her girlfriend: some kind of: peace or purity. Then she turns around and a graphic match shows her girlfriend standing behind her holding a note. A master shot then shows them sitting next to each other, and a straight cut then shows a close up of them sitting next to each other having a conversation. Reverse shots show them conversing. An insert shot then again shows her talking in the bedroom, however, in these shots she looks older and more mature than before. We also see insert shots of them writing and receiving letters from each other. It then ends with her speaking to the camera in the room. The best parts of this film are the variety of camera angles used. However, I think that this also led to certain things like the emphasis on the setting and pond unnecessary. It just felt like they were buying time by showing the pond so much. For my clip, I want to make sure I remove any unnecessary clips like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_bKQDg6fiI&feature=youtu.be
