Shot Composition

Hey blog, this post is about some different pictures and a video i took to describe and evaluate the depth of field in different shots.

  • Rule of Thirds-  This shot shows a young boy who's sitting in a chair. Through the rule of thirds we are allowed to see more of the scene however still drawing attention to the main subject.
  • Shallow Focus- This shot shows our subject in distress hiding his face from view of the camera. The intense focus on the main subject and lack of focus on anything else helps to emphasize the emotion portrayed by the subject in the image.

  • Standard Focus- This shot shows a statue and a man hiding behind it. The use of the standard focus allows us to see the two important aspects of the shot the foreground and midground meanwhile putting little emphasis the background.

  • Deep Focus- This shot shows our subject pointing towards the center of the frame. This type of focus allows everything in the shot to be clear allowing the audience to inspect many aspects of the setting and context. Such as the cancer sign in the back that happens to align with the subjects finger, this detail would've been easily missed if the chosen shot had a shallow focus emphasizing only the foreground.

  • Focus Pull- The shot starts in focus on a laptop and then shifts to the person typing on it. One of the main purposes of a focus pull is too reveal new information, this is effective as it is first unsuspecting with the human target out of focus and then coming into focus. For the audience this can present strong feelings such as excitement, shock, or anxiousness.
