Movie Rating
Hello blog, in this post I will be analyzing the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, directed by James Gunn and owned by The Walt Disney Company. This action sci-fi super-hero film is a favorite of mine as it has a good balance of entrancing action scenes and comedic relief.
The criteria I will be rating this movie on are the following: Story telling, camera work, dialogue, and actor performances.
Story telling 10/20: Id say the story in this movie is fairly interesting and holds the audience's attention for a good portion of the film. This is thanks to things such as the plot twist of Quill's dad being evil and killing his mom. As well as the development of the character relationships such as how Quill and Rocket learn to set aside their differences and the development of Quill and Gamora's relationship. However, the story for much of the movie can kind of seemed stretched too thin with many of the characters being in completely different settings and predicaments at the same time. While the story is decent I wouldn't list it as a major highlight of the movie.
Camera Work/Editing15/20: The Camera work and editing are good, they effectively enhance the watch experience and provide very nice and interesting visuals. With moments such as the dolly zoom after Quill learned of the secret of his mothers death show the high level technical application of camerawork in this film. Also, moments such as when Rocket and Yondu are traveling to planet Ego to get Quill displays great editing and visual effects. Overall, this movie certainly excels in the visuals department thanks to the unique editing and creative and stimulating camera angles and movements.
Dialogue/Music 20/20: This film has great dialogue and even greater sound design. A staple of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are the humor and this one doesn't disappoint. There are plenty of moments filled with entertaining dialogue and funny puns that make for a relaxing and fun watch experience. As far as sound goes this movie has nearly perfectly chosen music to fit every scenario, which often helps attribute to the carefree nature of the focus character of the movie Star-Lord. The choice of music is also great because it directly pays homage to Star-lord's character and origin of the music he used to listen to growing up to cope with his struggles.
Actors/Acting 15/20: The performances by the actors of this film were adequately entertaining and consistent throughout the story. This comes with some exceptions however in both good and bad ways. For example, the actor for the character Yondu gave a great performance that revealed and hinted to the characters soft rooted nature towards Quill without completely changing the characters otherwise closed off and tough demeanor. Adversely with the character Gamora the acting felt a bit forced at times with an overly brooding attitude and deep voice very consistently even in moments it didn't seem too called for. However, the majority of the cast gave very entertaining performances and providing humorous and satisfying dynamics to create a nice watching experience.
Overall 60/80: While this film certainly has it's flaws with story-telling and character moments it's strengths such as visuals, audio, and humor and what truly make this movie and turn it into a very enjoyable experience. I would recommend this movie to any Marvel fans or general Sci-Fi fans who love some comedy and action.
