Analyzing Technical Elements of Film
I chose to comment on moments from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, an action sci-fi movie based on the marvel comics by the same name, and directed by James Gunn. This is one of my favorite movies in the MCU franchise. In particular I will be pointing out what i think to be some of the best composed and best looking shots from the movie.
The film opens with a establishing shot of a flashback setting of the main protagonist's hometown of Missouri. This shot gives us a glance into how this place looked before our main character was born. This shot also sets up perfectly to introduce the youthful versions of Star-lord's (the protagonist) parents.
The next impactful moment is an ariel shot of the first upcoming action scene. This moment is also the first we get with our main characters. I liked this shot not only for the nice angle and colors but also for the sound motif. While the camera is moving in throughout the sky to get closer to the cast we get to hear a piece of the Guardians of the Galaxy theme that was carried on from the first movie. This sound motif is a perfect addition to the movie especially from returning fans of the first movie as it lets you anticipate what or who I should say we're about to be introduced to.
The next shot I find very interesting from this movie is a tracking shot where the camera follows along with 3 of our main characters as they take on a multitude of foes. What's so special about this shot to me is how it's able to exemplify the power and fear inducing presence Yondu has on his crew who soon came to realize betraying him earlier in the film was a big mistake. This shot is great at showing the effortlessness of Yondu's ability to control his devastating weapon, a whistle controlled arrow.
I chose this next shot because of it's emotional significance to the character Star-lord, as well because of how it reveals a crucial piece of missing information and starts the climax of the story. This shot utilizes a dolly zoom in order to portray the sense of betrayal and drastic shift in thought process of the main character to the audience. As everything he believed to be true about his mother and father turned out to be not the whole truth. We can see the characters emotional state go from confused to quickly angry after learning that his father killed his mother.
The final moment I chose was a two shot of both Groot and Rocket where dialogue can be heard off screen from Star-lord. I like this moment due to the comedic relief it provides for the audience in a moment that should be otherwise highly tense and action packed. The dynamic that can be seen from Rocket to Groot in this two shot excellently displays the differences in their characters. As Rocket can be seen as his usuals agitated pessimistic self while Baby Groot is seen being carefree and not very focused on the task at hand.
To conclude, this movie is packed full of creative and interesting shots, angles, and sound choices. This movie is simply overall very fun and entertaining and in my opinion definitely lives up to the renown and quality of the first movie.
